There’s a powerful truth embedded in the saying, “It doesn’t take much to convince someone who is already convinced.” This sentiment perfectly encapsulates our recent collaboration with Sherwood High School on Bannerghatta Road, Bangalore, for a green school initiative focused on book recycling designed by Grewind Solutions LLP and Recycle Green.
The moment Green school program which was designed together by Grewind Solutions LLP and Recycle Green was pitched to the school authorities they didn’t take much time to decide and quickly asked us to go ahead and plan for their upcoming Parent Teachers meeting. Their enthusiasm was infectious, and despite having less than a week to plan the event, they were fully on board. This initial eagerness set the tone for a successful and impactful initiative.
A Shared Vision for Sustainability
At Grewind, we’re passionate about promoting sustainable practices and products and empowering communities to reduce their environmental footprint. We believe education is key to achieving this goal. So, when the opportunity arose to partner with Sherwood High School, we knew it would be a fruitful collaboration.
Turning a Challenge into an Opportunity
Naturally, some concerns arose regarding the short timeframe. We worried that parents wouldn’t have enough time to gather old books at home. However, these concerns were quickly dispelled. Over the four-day event, we were overwhelmed by the response – a staggering 1631 kg of old school books were collected!
This incredible achievement is a testament to the collective effort and commitment of Sherwood High School, its students, parents, and the Grewind team. It demonstrates the power of a shared vision and a well-coordinated approach when it comes to environmental initiatives.
The Journey of Recycled Books
So, what happens to these collected books now? These books won’t simply gather dust in a landfill. Instead, they’ll be transported to dedicated recycling centers. There, they’ll undergo a transformation, being broken down and repurposed into new, sustainable recycled paper products.
This process offers a multitude of environmental benefits. By recycling paper, we conserve valuable resources like trees and water.
- According to the American Forest & Paper Association, every ton of recycled paper saves approximately 17 trees, ~1430 ltrs of water, 4,100 kilowatt-hours of electricity, and 28 kg of air pollution.
- The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that paper and paperboard make up a significant portion of municipal solid waste (MSW). In 2021, paper and paperboard accounted for 22.9% of MSW generation, or 67.3 million tons of material disposed of in landfills and combustion facilities.
- Paper production is a water-intensive process. Recycling paper significantly reduces the amount of water required compared to producing virgin paper. The EPA estimates that recycled paper production uses 20-50% less water compared to virgin paper production.
Recycling paper helps to divert this waste from landfills, reducing greenhouse gas emissions associated with decomposition and the need to harvest new trees for paper production.
Ultimately, these recycled books will find a new purpose, contributing to a more circular economy.
A Collaboration with Lasting Impact
The book recycling initiative is a prime example of how even seemingly small actions can generate significant environmental benefits. The overwhelming response from the Sherwood High School community serves as a powerful testament to the growing awareness and commitment towards sustainability, especially amongst the younger generation.
This collaboration signifies the beginning of a lasting relationship between Grewind and such environmentally conscious schools. We’re excited to explore future initiatives, working together to empower students and their families to embrace a greener lifestyle.
